How to safely remove pollen at home
We always encourage our clients to take pride in their vehicles, and keeping your paint clean is one of the simplest and best ways to maintain value. If you’re tackling the post-pollen cleanup yourself, please keep these best practices in mind to avoid common DIY pitfalls:
- Never "Dry Wipe": Even amongst longtime locals this is likely the most common mistake we see. Pollen is a fine, abrasive powder, so using a dry cloth to wipe it away is akin to using fine-grit sandpaper. This will eventually show itself as swirls in your clearcoat. Always rinse your vehicle first.
- The Top-Down Method: Make friends with gravity and always wash from the roof down. More than just being organized, it prevents you from dragging pollen-heavy water over panels you’ve already cleaned, saving you from lackluster results, washing it twice, or rubbing pollen into your car’s finish.
- Check Your Cabin Air Filter: If you notice a lingering "musty" or dusty smell inside your car, your cabin air filter has likely done its job by trapping pollen. We recommend checking this filter in May to ensure your vehicle’s HVAC system, and YOU, are breathing clean air.
- Check Your Engine’s Air Filter: While you’re at it, your engine needs to breathe too! All that fine particulate that can clog the pleats of your engine’s air filter, restricting airflow and reducing your fuel efficiency. If it’s yellow-coated, it’s time for a fresh one.
- Use Proper Automotive Soap (Skip the Dish Soap): It’s tempting to use household dish soap, but don't. Dish soap is a "degreaser" designed to strip oils from pots and pans, which also, unfortunately, goes after your car's protective wax as well as drying out rubber seals. A high-quality automotive soap is pH-balanced and formulated for "lubrication" as in it creates a slick, slippery barrier between your mitt and the paint, allowing the pollen to glide off the surface.

If you find yourself washing your car every 48 hours, or if you are concerned that the acidic residue has already started to etch your finish, it may be time for a professional intervention.
